A True Hero
Copyright 2003 by Jon Gill

Maximus was a hero
A general with great heart
And even though he was deeply wronged
He made it a new start
He fought, he won, and won some more
In fact, he never lost
He overthrew an evil king
And it was worth the life it cost.

What is a hero?
A mighty warrior and friend
A general of many men
Unbeaten to the end.

A pilot fighting Germans
Once put it very nice
He said, "The measure of this short life
Is found only in sacrifice."
Well, that young man, he died that day
His plane went down that night
But he was never worried -
He knew he'd done what's right.

What is a hero?
One who stands up for what's right
He won't give in to fear, no
Or go down without a fight.

There was a man named Wallace
Not a passive man, but wise
His people were in bondage
But if you looked into his eyes
You'd see that deep inside him
He had a dangerous side
When he fought, he fought for freedom
It's what he shouted when he died.

What is a hero?
One who fights to set men free
Who knows life, it's not worth living
Without one's liberty.

There's a man I'm sure you've heard of
Some people say He's "nice"
If He's really such a passive man
What would He have to sacrifice?
No, He gave everything up for me
He endured it through great pain
He fought, He died, He rose again
To free me from my chains.

This is a hero:
One who lives and breathes for me
A humble man, a warrior
A lover and a king
Who always does what's right to do
Who dies to set men free
The hero that I sing of
He is every one of these.

This is my hero:
Coming through in thick and thin
There is no other hero
That can compare to Him.
