Rock Song
Copyright 2003 by Jon Gill

Did you ever pick up a rock
And just hold it in your hand
And think about the mountains
And the tiny grains of sand
It never laughs or jeers at you
It is not prone to mock
In fact no matter how you treat it
It’s still…just a rock.

We humans are so fickle
We all have things to prove
And struggle just to thank the Lord
That we can even move
And man is man, and cannot be
The god of anything
But still we taunt and strut our stuff
We have our song to sing

Well I’ve been thinking lots about
The value of a stone
There’s many more of them than us
No, they are not alone
They wait for us to delude ourselves
So they can give their shout
For when our praises to God cease
They will all sing aloud!

We cannot let this happen
(Though it’d be interesting)
We cannot let our praises end
We cannot cease to sing!
We must cry out in every day
We must look for His face
We must not let those steady rocks
Be allowed to take our place!

He will be praised by all He’s made
The stones will all give heed
That chorus will be awesome
But we’re supposed to lead!
So let us put aside ourselves
And gather up the Earth
To harmonize just how infinite
Is the measure of His worth!
