The Losing Game
Copyright 2001 by Jon Gill

Our story begins
Like so many before it
One heart is broken
The other ignores it
According to the Losing Game
This is how things turn out
Why is it always the same,
Ending in a burnout?

She gives all of her heart to him
He says he'll hold it well
She looks for her love through him
He looks for something else
They agree on a happy medium
That's not so happy at all
One grows tired of the tedium
The other tired of the wall

This is the nineteenth time she's done this
As foolish as it may be
And after each time she has lost
Another piece of reality
It was all done in the name of fun
But damaging at the core
Can she give her real heart to anyone,
Or even find it anymore?

Number Five's got a piece of that broken heart
Lodged in his memory
And Number One from the very start
Said it was meant to be
Unlucky, unpleasant Number Thirteen
Was a promising man at first
But promises apparently aren't what they seem
And kissing lying lips is the worst

And now Nineteen has taken ill
The relationship is sour
Whose shoes did she try to make him fill
At such an early hour?
Before she goes on to number Twenty
She pauses with tears in her eyes
Of the relationships that she's had plenty
Not one of them was wise

She knows there must be something more
There must be another way
She never went through that blood-stained door
Or experienced agape
Her hands are empty and so is her soul
She's at her ultimate low
His Holy, holey hands will fill that hole
And finally, she'll know

No more to play the Losing Game
No more to look for men
No more will things end up the same
Nor have heartbreak ever again
For now she's found the real True Love
Even while she was a sinner
If you want to play the Winning Game
Then give your heart to the Winner.
