Happy-Hunting
Copyright 2003 by Jon Gill

“Happy hunting,” someone tells me
As I shoulder my bow
‘Cuz I’m off to hunt a stately deer
And everybody knows
The antlers line the wall at home
And I search for a new set
And unawares, the next one falls
I’ve caught the best one yet.

I remember looking in his eyes
‘Ere I let the arrow go
It’s as if he heard me, smelled me, saw me
But never feared my bow
He looked away, without a care
Even as the string was humming
And it struck him through his perfect heart
He never saw it coming.

         (Chorus)
How many deer will there be?
How many oysters in the sea?
How many pearls will have to fall?
How many antlers on the wall?
               Happy-hunting, hunting happiness
               Will never work at all.

Tightly sealed your lips, as well they should be
But spicing them will open them up to me
And from your flawless lining I’ll take what I wish
Adding to my string of pearls, I’ll leave you in a dish

Why am I fishing with this net,
Forever wishing for what I won’t get?
Is it just the shell that has me haunted?
Or the pearl I know too well but never wanted?

(Chorus)
